The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the Mormons) provides a searchable database of more than 300 million names including: Ancestral File and the International Genealogical Index. It also provides access to the Family History Library Catalogue as well as thousands of indexed web sites. Patrons visiting FamilySearch.org will see a prompt to register for a free account or to sign into their existing account to continue using all the free expanded benefits.

The FreeBMD Project aims to provide free Internet access to Civil Registration (St. Catherine's House) indexes for England and Wales. The index is compiled progressively by volunteers, but is not verified by the Public Record Office. It is indexed for the period 1837-1997 but the whole period has not been transcribed yet.

FreeREG is a companion project to FreeBMD (a database of the GRO birth, marriage and death indexes from 1837) and FreeCEN (a database of census information). It aims to provide free Internet searches of baptism, marriage, and burial records, that have been transcribed from parish and non-conformist registers of the U.K. FreeREG is a work in progress and volunteers are transcribing the registers, so not all counties and places or years are complete. The Belfast, Edinburgh and London Gazettes are freely accessible via this website. The Gazettes are the official journal published by the British government, and contain legal and state notices such as notices about military and civil promotions, honours, business announcements (such as partnerships and bankruptcies), land sale announcements, probate notices, reports on military events etc. The Gazette was first published in 1665. Search the GRO historical birth and death indexes and order Certificates/PDFs Online. You need to Register and sign in, it is free. The GRO's indexes also contain for births the mother's maiden name and for deaths the age at death which can help you identify which certificate to order. This information is not available on Ancestry or Findmypast or FreeBDM.
